ABOUT THE RETREAT

Explore the ancient Buddhist teachings of the Brahmaviharas that are remedies for the heart. These immeasurable qualities that arise within through the cultivation of mindfulness and wisdom.  Letting go of the burdens of the heart and clearly seeing things as they truly are can be realized with skillful effort to abide in compassion, lovingkindness, joy and equanimity. Discover what is possible when the heart is open and the mind is free.

Teachings on the Four Immeasurables will be offered by Trina.  Instructions will be provided on ways to directly experience the teachings through the application of meditation and mindfulness.  You will learn techniques and gain perspectives on how to relate to the matter of the heart and undertake the training of the heart.  Trina will lead a guided meditation giving participants a chance to 'try it on' and ‘see for yourself’.  Chants on the Lovingkindness Sutra, and others will support the opening of the heart. There will be opportunities for group reflection and one-on-one interviews with Trina.

This retreat is suitable for new and experienced practitioners. Held in the container of Noble Silence. There will be periods of sitting, mindful walking, and practicing mindfulness in all postures and all activities. There will Dharma talks, chants, and group reflection and responses. Interviews with Trina will offer those who need additional support individualized attention and one-on-one guidance.

Exciting News! Inside of the commitment to increase accessibility for retreat experience, we are proud to announce that with the support of good friends and Mount Adams Buddhist Temple, two things are now made possible:

  • Financial support is now available to those who are not able to cover the full cost of the retreat fees. The financial support does not cover dana to the teacher. Gratitude to Thay Kozen and the staff at Mt. Adams Buddhist Temple for making this possible.

  • Going hybrid! The retreat is now offered on Zoom, thanks to Reverend Scott See for his effort in making this possible. This will allow practitioners who are unable to come in-person to join virtually and participate in the retreat from their home.

ABOUT THE RETREAT CENTER: Trout Lake Abbey Retreat Center

The Abbey is the product of a 20-year friendship between a Zen Buddhist monk and a Druid priest. Venerable Thay Kozen and Reverend Kirk Thomas initially created this dynamic 23 acre sanctuary as a home for their two faiths and a place for people of all beliefs to find peace.

The land was originally a farm, and while flower gardens and landscaping embellish the sacred spaces, they continue this relationship to the soil as a WSDA certified organic producer. You will find rows of vegetable beds lush with greens in the spring/summer and fruit trees dripping with pears, apples and plums in the fall.

The Abbey host a variety of retreats throughout the year- many Buddhist or Druid in nature, but also yoga, qigong, Chinese medicine, dance and music. Folks can come for private retreats during which they may meditate with monks in the temple, receive guidance with their teachers, walk the lavender labyrinth or read a book by the pond.

TLA mission is to support the well-being of all living things and provide a space for people to explore whatever spiritual path to which they are drawn.
